On May bank holiday weekend a small surfshop was quietly opened in Polzeath called ‘Sideways’. Managed by Will Brawn (the carpenter from Truro) the shop is attached & forms part of the building that has become ‘The Tubestation’ in central Polzeath. The Tubestation was created 2 years ago by Kris Lannen & Henry Cavender as a Christian based cafe and church which features a skateboard ramp in the place of the pulpit. The shop which was a Midland Bank come HSBC until a few years ago and is surrounded in solid concrete within the ceilings and walls has now become a retro shop stocking Nineplus, Shortstraw, Ranbow Sandals, Rhythm and other similar styled surfing brands. The style is vintage and includes a sewing machine on display from 1895 and a mirror circa 1920’s.
Both Richard and Will at Nineplus have done their best to create a relaxed environment with features like a large wall mural, a showcase of Magic Carpets built in California and a resin tinted road sign. The shop is open from Tuesday to Saturday and if closed is due to Will testing rubber and fibreglass on the doorstep in the Polzeath peelers.
